A Fragment of Crucifixion. A Contemporary approach to a traditional representation. The orthodox hymn for this day: “Today is hanged by wood, the one that suspended earth in the sky”. The saddest momment.
This is actually a fragment of the Crucifixion icon inspired from the Cretan school of iconography. The color language is altered, but I believe that the emotions that are being created by this scene are still communicated to the viewer
- I started with the drawing on a specially prepared a hard birch plywood panel.
- I used the eggtempera technique, that is the one that is used in traditional iconography. In this technique we mix pigment (mineral) powders with egg and vinegar. Then we apply them layer upon layer to create the painting.
- When the painting is dried we add shellac and varnish to “seal” the colors and create an artifact that will last.
The Crucifixion icon comes wrapped as a gift assorted with some extras from our shop.
