The Cherub and Good Thief meeting each other at the gates of Eden. The man that said :
“…And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise…”.
Tradition holds his name to be Dysmas or Demas and he is actually the first saint of the church . (Apocrypha gospels)
- The theme of the Penitent Thief is inspired by a medieval fresco found on Panagia Kera in Crete.
- The piece of wood was treated specially with gesso.
- Several layers of egg tempera .
- Finally the icon was varnished on the top, with shellac and resin varnish to last.
