Description
The representation derives from by the Book of Daniel. There we find the story and the Hymn of the Three Holy Children: “Blessed art thou, O Lord God of our Fathers: thy name is worthy to be praised and glorified for evermore..”
Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah were all companions of Daniel, Caught captive by the king Nebuchadnezzar and refusing to worship anyone but God alone, are therefore thrown in a furnace. Azariah prays and are delivered from the fire by an angel . The three children emerge unharmed. Nebuchadnezzar then orders the people to worship their God instead of the idol. The materials I used for the byzantine icon of the Three Holy Youths are the following:
- I made the painting with eggtempera on a carved on the sides (to create a border) wooden panel
- I ve gessoed just the parts where the figures are and left the wooden board obvious. Additionally I ve used an organic dye to color the wood and to create an antique copperish brown look on the gold
- Eggtempera and copper gold had covered the surface
- While shellac and varnish have sealed the colors to produce an artifact that will last
Finally, the icon comes in its own packaging, with the inclusion of some little extras from our shop
